The Norwegian Daniel Rybakken is one of the world’s hottest lighting designers at the moment and I´m certain that we are going to hear a lot about him in the years to come. His work occupies the area between art and design, forming limited editions, art installations and prototypes for serial production. Recently he received the prestigious award ‘Best of the Best’ Red Dot Award and the Elle Decoration International Design Award for the lamp “Counterbalance” that was presented in Milan last year. This man definitely gives lighting a new perceptive!
His newest design “Ascent” was presented in Milan this year, and is an exciting new lamp that uses the same archetypical head found on Counterbalance, mounted on a slender vertical stem. By moving the head along the stem, the light intensity goes from being turned off at the bottom position, to gradually ascending to the full light output at the top. This gives the user control over not only the light intensity, but also the spread of the light – genius!
The award winning Light Tray is another one of his great designs. Designed with Andreas Engesvik for Asplund.
