A lot of you asked me about our white painted parquet in the living room after I showed you some pictures yesterday, and instead of answering everyone of you I thought I could write about how I did it here…
First, I repaired the floor with a light sanding. Whether your wood floor is stained or previously painted, use sandpaper to lightly go over the finish so that the floor will accept the paint. Use a fine-grit paper for this process. I used nr. 180.
Then I vacuumed the floor before I washed it with a blend of ammonia and water. It´s important to remove all dirt, dust and oil before you start painting.
When the floor was completely dry, I started using a brush on the outer edges of the floor. Afterwards I used a roller attached to a painting pole and painted the rest of the floor. I painted 3 coats on our floor, but this will vary from floor to floor and from paint to paint.
The paint I used was a water-based paint called “Trestjerner”. After doing a lot of research on what other have used and what they recommended on the “paint-shop”, I was quite happy with this one – it was very easy to work with. I have actually started to paint a laminate floor out in the hallway with the same paint, as they say that you can paint them as well. I have 2 coats left, but I will tell you how it worked out when I´m done.
The color I used is called “White” and it´s only available in semi-gloss(40) I think. Anyway, that was the gloss on the paint I bought.
I hope this answered some of the questions that you had, but remember that this is only the description on how I did it. I´m just an amateur and this was the first time I painted a floor, so please talk to your local paint shop and ask for help. We have different kinds of painting from country to country, and there are probably different directions on how you should do it as well.
Thank you so much for all of your comments on my last post – I´m glad you like our new WHITE living room. If you want to see more pictures, I have uploaded some on Stylizimo.com as well…

Ja, det skygråe er også veldig lekker. Vurderte lenge om jeg skulle gå for den grå faktisk. Kanskje jeg gjør det i et annet rom 🙂
It looks lovely! Isn’t it a lot of work to keep a white floor white (as in clean).
Almost weekend! Have a nice one.

This is very very interesting!! I have laminate floors throughout my place (23 year old tundra from IKEA) and in my recently renovated rooms I have white laminate… I wanted to make it white all over the house so I am very curious on how it worked out and what you did… Yeah… It will be a hell off a job to lay out new floors so I hope it works out well…. although I could work it out my self seeing I do not want the wooden loooked laminate anymore…
Also …. Your NIB blog day sounds like as much fun as we had here in Amsterdam 😉
Hugs, Desiree
Oh this is the post! So no sealant on top at all? The paint doesn’t scratch once you step on it with shoes? =)
No, not at all. I also have a dog that run like crazy on it and no scratches. I don´t know if they have this particular paint in your country though. I think they sell this only in Norway.
Guys i have decided to get wooden flooring done in my living room which , And i have been searching for the some professional’s to get it done , There are wide range of variety for wooden flooring on web like Woodsmith Hardwood Floors. but are their prices are reasonable ?
Wow lucky you. Unfortunately I haven’t found anything of that quality in Jakarta. *Sigh* my landlord refuses to upgrade the paint in our flat. Can yo imagine: its water soluble?!? So I cannot even clean it or else it fades. I’m sure its not very health for the lungs as well. Ahhhh… the perils of being an expat. LOL. On our next post, I’ll be sure to paint the walls myself with you as my inspiration so I can enjoy it for a longer period. It doesn’t make sense for me to do anything now since we are on our last year. Again thanks for the comment back!
There is an old American tradition of painting wood floors dating from the days when folks could not afford carpeting, rugs or tiling. Some of these old floors still exist, and show the skill of some of our artisans or yesteryear. Marbling effects, tiling effects, mosaic– you name it, they painted it on a floor!

You got a really useful blog I have been here reading for about an hour. I am a newbie and your success is very much an inspiration for me.
Thanks for sharing such a wonderful article. Use high quality paint and brushes. Use a slow drying paint (not latex) unless you use an additive to slow down the drying time. Slower drying paints leave less visible brush strokes.
