There is light - painting by Nina Holst

DECORATION TIP AND MY LATEST WORK

On dark walls it can be nice with light colored paintings, like this latest work of mine. The artwork and its details will stand out, but also lighten up the dark wall. It´s also a nice way to repeat the light colors from your furniture etc. – this way you get a overall harmony in the room.

The painting in the photo above, There is light (1500x1200mm), is now available for sale. You can check out my website byNinaHolst.com for more info and a close up photo.

Budget tip - tablecloth

Tablecloths can be very expensive, and I usually find it difficult to find the right color and fabric that I want. My trick is therefore to buy curtains instead. Somehow the curtains are cheaper and usually there are two in a pack so you get two tablecloths at a usually good price. If you share a pack with a friend, you will get it even cheaper! The selection is also much better when it comes to colors and different types of fabric, so you have a lot more to choose from if you are looking for something in particular.

This weekend I had a good friend over for some Thai food, and for the table setting I used this gray cotton and linen curtain that I found at Ikea a couple of weeks ago. It turned out to be perfect as a tablecloth and I got exactly the color and fabric that I was looking for. Today´s budget tip from me!

Eldvarm

If there is one place I have really felt a lack of great products, it has to be accessories for the fireplace. I have looked around, but it has actually proven quite difficult to find a good looking wood basket or tools to clean the fireplace. So to be honest, for my photo and styling these tools have been hidden from view. However, from a practical point of view this is…well, not very practical. Such accessories are as permanent as the fireplace itself, and you can´t really use it without having the tools nearby.

But luckily someone has seen this as an opportunity and solved it – beautifully. Let me introduce you to Eldvarm.

Founded by Louise Varre, Eldvarm is the company that was sparked by the passion for fire and design. Coming from Norway, Louise has grown up with Scandinavian design and its focus on simplicity and elegance. She also had to endure the cold winters and experienced how the fireplace became the focal point where the family gathered and great conversations happened.

Today Louise has used these lovely memories from her upbringing to create high-quality fireplace accessories that really stand out. With the help of Swedish designer Emma Olbers, great care has been put into every aspect of these products, from the design to the production process.  The result is a first impression that awes you, but it is when you start looking into the details and how these products are made that you really start appreciating having Eldvarm in your home.

Eldvarm´s products are handmade with a true attention to details.
All the leather is from the Swedish tannery Tärnsjö, greased for protection but it will darken over time and obtain that great looking patina of used leather. Can´t wait : )

The bathrooms in my home are old. More precisely 1986 old. Luckily, the main bathroom has a basic design with white titles so it is not too bad and after painting the bathroom furniture it turned ok. However, for the second bathroom, they originally chose red tiles and there is no question that you have stepped into the 80s when you use this bathroom.

Needless to say, I am dreaming of making changes. So to take it one step further I thought it would be fun to do a bit of planning and look at the options.

THE COMPROMISE

Since bathrooms are usually smaller rooms, it is tricky to mix both the functional and the design. I want it spacious but still have storage. I want it to look great but still be affordable, and I want to make it my own with some nice details.

Not the easiest criteria to check off, and adding to the difficulty is the fact that great looking bathroom furniture is hard to find. But it seems change is happening, and I was very happy to be introduced to the newly launched Graphic series from Gustavsberg which actually checks off all my criteria.

THE SOLUTION

First, let´s look at the design. It is clean and modern, and it caught my eye the first time I saw it. They had done something different and done it really well! But what about the functional aspect? Actually, reading about Gustavsberg I learned that they design their furniture from the principle “form follows function”, meaning that from great design comes great function. So does it?

The short answer is yes. Since I have such a small bathroom it requires some thoughtful solutions and I am glad to see that they have put some thought into this. First of all, most of the Graphic series furniture comes in two depth sizes. Secondly, everything is module based so you can pretty much create your own unique setup. And thirdly, they have added neat features like this flap with a magnetic list.

Planning a bathroom upgrade

Another thing I liked is the gray color the modules are available in, as seen below. Wonder if the blue color on the wall is LADY 4477 Deco Blue from Jotun? It looks really good and shows that bathrooms don’t necessarily have to be white nor covered in tiles.

Lastly, I am happy to see that they have accessories that will let me add my own touch. The ones that caught my attention are the leather knob and the black knob, which can also be used as a hook. Really cool!

It was fun to do a bit of dreaming and planning. Now I know that when the time comes to upgrade my bathroom(s) there are actually options available that will satisfy my taste, including design and function.

What do you think of the new Graphic series from Gustavsberg?

When we renovated the rooms downstairs last year, we painted everything white as I wanted it to be as light as possible. Originally the rooms had a wooden ceiling and a dark gray carpet ( like you see in the before photo of our bedroom ) so it felt very dark down there. A change had to be made, and white was the obvious choice. However, with every surface white, including the concrete floors, the rooms became too anonymous and “cold” for me.

It was time to get a warmer and more cozy feeling and after some research, I ended up with LADY 0394 Varmgrå – a color that also harmonizes well with the new colors we have upstairs in the kitchen, hallway and living room.

I´ll show you more photos of the other rooms when I get everything back up on the walls etc., but here is a little sneak peek of the new color in my office. The new color changed the rooms dramatically in a good way I think, and I love the result and my “new” office” What do you think? You can see my before office here.
